What is the biggest challenge you have overcome in your career?
When I took my first job out of the United States (in Rio de Janeiro), I really struggled with being able to communicate effectively. I was really hung up on making mistakes when I spoke the language, and, at first, was hesitant to speak it as much as I should have. After a short time, I realized that the only way to learn was to go all in and not worry about the errors. Once I got past my fear of making mistakes, my command of the language, and ability to communicate effectively, grew exponentially.
What is a skill you would like to learn & why?
I love music and play piano, guitar, and saxophone, but I would really love to learn how to play the cello!
Where is your favorite place to go on a weekday afternoon when you have no plans or obligations?
It is a tie between:
- My home studio where I can play and make music for hours and,
- Weather permitting – outside for a walk or jog.
Name your top 3 favorite books or movies & why?
Of Mice and Men – The themes in the book are really interesting to me: Every character has a dream, struggles, deal with loneliness, etc.
Anna Karenina – The story and characterization are rich and complex; it’s a nice counter to the typical Hollywood happy ending
Shawshank Redemption – Good acting, good musical score and an all-around interesting story
What drives you to do what you do? What motivates you?
I love to learn and I love to solve problems—I challenge myself every day to learn something new and stretch the boundaries of my knowledge and capabilities. I would also say that, in general, I have a good deal of professional pride and care deeply about the quality of my work.
